The FKG Group was engaged by the Department of Education to design and construct a new Performing Arts Centre for the Toowoomba State High School.
The new Performing Arts Centre (PAC) includes music rooms and multi-media as well as car parking to support the PAC.
The scope included not only the new PAC, but relocation of the tennis/multipurpose courts, oval retaining wall upgrade and refurbishment to the Art Space in B Block and E Block.
During the design phase, our in-house team held several collaborative design workshops with the school staff and walked through each room to understand the school’s use of the GLA’s. This hands-on experience between our design team and the teachers ensured the design of the new building would be completely fit-for-purpose with outstanding functionality.
By going through this process, the team was able to remove the operable walls originally included in the scope and substituted the nominated classing for a cheaper alternative while still achieving the standard of finish required. Changing these items provided credit back to the DoE to help fund a link bridge that was removed from scope after being deemed too costly at project award.
The works were safely delivered in an operational school environment which required extensive planning and safety controls.
