The FKG Group was engaged by the Department of Education for the Design and Construction of the new Pimpama North State School. The project had a very tight program and allowed early access to the Admin Building in November 2020.
There was a strong push to have the first stage of the building handed over prior to October 2020. FKG drove subcontractors, organising extra working hours, booking extra labour to assist trades, and close management of progress on site to achieve this.
To avoid delays due to COVID-19 on long lead time items, mechanical equipment, and sanitary and tap wear were procured right at project commencement.
During civil works, undocumented asbestos was uncovered. The team immediately engaged a licenced contractor to remove the contaminated material so works could continue.
Civil works also encountered a large amount of rock. This took two months longer than anticipated to remove. The project team ensured all works around this extra excavation were able to continue to limit impact to the program.
Various changes and additions were requested to the playground equipment, as well as the addition of access ramps in some areas. FKG introduced a phased handover, to allow the school to occupy some buildings while we constructed the changes to the landscaping.
The project was delivered on time and budget with an excellent safety result, no major safety incidents and no NCRs raised on PQC audits.
