A new East meets a new West at Dalby

With the aim of improving road safety and travel times for commuters on the Warrego Highway, the FKG Group Civil team were engaged by the Department of Transport and Main Roads to complete construction on the Dalby Eastern and Western Access Upgrades project. This was a civil joint venture for the FKG Group, undertaken with partners McIlwain Civil.

The $92 million project scope included upgrading the existing four lanes, constructing additional turning lanes, traffic signalised intersections, street lighting, storm water replacement, centre median installation and urban landscaping throughout the town. Pavement construction included lime stabilised subgrade, cement stabilised gravels, and deep lift asphalt.

FKG Group Project Manager Paul Mochan said the particular asphalt used for the project was selected for its resilience.

“Deep lift asphalt is not commonly used in regional areas of Queensland, however the project invested over $30M into constructing pavements with more than 150,000 tonnes of deep lift asphalt, which will substantially increase pavement durability and design life that will benefit the people of Dalby for many years to come.”

Keeping locals informed was of paramount importance throughout the life of the project.

“With changed access to local businesses throughout the project, our core focus was to ensure we communicated with locals in a timely manner. We employed a Community Liaison professional to engage and pass on key messages within the local community, and community information sessions were conducted to better understand the issues residents and businesses were facing during the roadworks.”

Paul said the project management team and workforce exceeded 100 people, and they deserve tremendous credit for overcoming the challenges of this project and completing the works on time.
