19th December 2018
Constructed by the FKG Group, the Cairns Performing Arts Centre was officially opened on Saturday 15th December, following two and a half years of hard work.
The Mayor of Cairns, Cr Bob Manning OAM, opened the event and praised the FKG Group in his speech.
“Thank you for completing what at times has been a difficult task. Your team has toughed this out, and I recognise and give thanks to the leadership of Nick Gardner in doing this. I for one, would not hesitate in working with this Queensland contractor again.” (View Full Speech)
Throughout the $54 million project, 1,464 workers were employed, 60 local trade companies were engaged, 14,400 tonne of concrete was poured, 6.3 million recycled glass bottles were used (as part of recycled construction materials), and 500 tonnes of structural steelwork completed.
The much-anticipated Centre boasts an ultra-modern 940 seat main auditorium with balcony, fly tower and orchestra pit, with the capacity to host some of Australia’s most popular theatrical and musical performances. The new venue will replace the existing Civic Theatre in Cairns and form a contemporary entertainment hub, sure to be enjoyed by the local community.
