Warwick Hospital Emergency Department Refurbishment Complete

20th November 2018

Earlier this year the FKG Group was engaged by the Queensland Government, through the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service, to complete a refurbishment of the Warwick Hospital emergency department.

The construction team were tasked with re-configuring the allied health department, setting up a temporary emergency department in order to demolish the existing one, full refurbishment of the emergency department – including upgrades to various medical gas, electrical and mechanical systems, and fire rating the 130-year-old sandstone feature wall that formed part of the original hospital building.

A challenging project, the refurbishment was required to be carried out within a live operating environment, where minimal impact to both patients and medical staff was of paramount importance. Extensive planning and risk management was implemented by the design team who had a thorough understanding of the medical environment through previous experience.

Operations Manager – Construction, Anthony Lahood said minimising health risks was a key factor in planning. “We needed to ensure we implemented strategies to minimise risk and worked closely with infection prevention planning consultants throughout the life of the project.”

In order to ensure practicality of the refurbished department and reconfigured layout, the design team involved the emergency department doctors and nurses in final decisions. “The team had detailed discussions with the staff to ensure the layout was practical and all equipment was easily accessible,” Mr Lahood said.

The FKG Group looks forward to further building upon their relationship with the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service in the coming years.
